The aim of the SDGs is to address the world’s most pressing economic, social and environmental issues. Due to the way they were developed, the SDGs have been described as the output of the world’s largest materiality process and therefore for business they provide a globally agreed framework to address sustainability issues. There is also recognition that the private sector will play a (if not the) key role in achieving them.
The business case is clear. At its most simplistic, it won’t be possible to have a strong, functioning business in a world of increasing inequality, poverty and climate change. More specifically, in January this year, the Business and Sustainable Development Commission reported that the business opportunities opened up by the drive to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in just four economic areas will add up to $12tr over the next 15 years.
However, now two years in, business has arguably been slow to react in using the Goals to drive meaningful change. We hear of various issues, from companies not knowing where to start, to difficulty in aligning them with the priorities of their stakeholders. We will also ask what additional services and support consultancies like ours can offer which might accelerate progress and enable companies to engage with the SDGs in a meaningful way.
The round table will be chaired by Simply Sustainable Director, Alasdair Marks, who will be joined by CEO Nicola Stopps.
